IMAX auditorium to open this summer at Regal Mayfaire 16

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The IMAX Experience® will open this summer at Regal Mayfaire Stadium 16.

“The IMAX Theatre will showcase films in one of the existing auditoriums through a newly installed IMAX digital projection system, specially designed IMAX screen, and a powerful audio system delivering laser-aligned digital sound,” stated a news release from Regal Entertainment Group.

The following movies are expected to be released in IMAX:

  • The Dark Knight Rises (07/20)
  • Frankenweenie in 3D (10/05)
  • Skyfall (James Bond) (11/09)
  • Gravity in 3D (11/21)
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 3D (12/23)

“Regal’s Mayfaire Stadium 16 is already an extremely popular location drawing moviegoers from all across the region. The addition of the IMAX Experience will further enhance the entertainment choices available for our loyal patrons in Wilmington,” stated Russ Nunley, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Regal Entertainment Group.

Students recreate each of the 50 states using boxes

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Fifth grade students at St. Mark Catholic School are showing off projects Wednesday that they have been working months to create.

Each year, the school hosts a “State in a Box” event to teach others facts about each of the 50 states.

Students spend three to four months making displays out of refrigerator boxes of the states.

School officials said they are very proud of the creative talent their students have portrayed.

Wrightsville Beach recognized for outstanding finance reporting

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Wrightsville Beach has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

According to a press release, Town Manager Bob Simpson credits Finance Officer Peggy Jones for the recognition.  Jones also received the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for the 17th year in a row.

Simpson said the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

“The Town of Wrightsville Beach owes Peggy a true debt of gratitude for her service to its citizens,” said Simpson in a press release.

Education leaders to answer questions on live TV tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley will join a panel of local middle school principals live on The Learning Network next week.

According to a news release, the NHCS-TV Studio phone lines will be open from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 for viewer questions for Markley and the following guests:

  • Dr. Sherry Pinto, principal of Holly Shelter Middle School
  • Patrick McCarty, principal of Murray Middle School
  • Robin Meiers, principal of Myrtle Grove Middle School
  • Wade Smith, principal of Noble Middle School
  • William Hatch, principal of Roland-Grise Middle School
  • Sharon Dousharm, principal of Trask Middle School
  •  Dr. Sherry Veasey, principal of Williston Middle School

Viewers can also submit questions via the NHCS Facebook page or Twitter account using the hashtag #callinshow.

Parents of students will have the opportunity to discuss the new core curriculum, tests, dress codes and renovations.

Man found in submerged car off Figure Eight Island drowned

FIGURE EIGHT ISLAND, NC (WECT) - A preliminary autopsy report shows a man who was found dead in his car off Figure Eight Island last month drowned.

The body of Benjamin Williamson, 55, was discovered in April in a vehicle that was submerged off a boat ramp on Figure Eight Island.

Williamson had been reported as missing earlier that day.  Williamson was a managing director and portfolio manager of hedged U.S. equities strategy at Chilton Investment Co.

Family members said Williamson was originally from Raleigh but was visiting from New York.

Waterline replacement to close part of bridge

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – An old waterline under the north sidewalk along the West Salisbury Street bridge over Banks Channel is being replaced by the Town of Wrightsville Beach.

The work will only occur between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to a post on the Town’s website. During the time, the post said that only the south lane of the bridge will be open and traffic flow will be controlled by flagmen. The sidewalk will also be closed in the work area.
