Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

Children’s Theater in the Park is presenting the play Peter Pan Friday, March 15 at Wrightsville Beach Amphitheatre, according to a news release.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – If you’re looking for a weekend concert to attend, local band Groove Fetish will be rocking out at The Palm Room Saturday.

Starting at 10 p.m., the jam rock band will take the stage. Groove Fetish’s Facebook page describes their music as being influenced by bands like Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Phish, Talking Heads and more.

WBS holds competition for art designs to represent the school

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Wrightsville Beach Elementary is hosting three separate art contests for all students.

The school is looking for unique designs for the WBS t-shirt for the 2013-14 school year, a new WBS flag to be hung outside on the flagpole, and a deign to use as a unique WBS masterpiece to be displayed in the foyer of the school for an entire year.

All projects are due by Feb. 25. Artists should designate which category they are submitting their artwork for and explain the design as well.

The entries will first be judged by faculty and staff members, followed by  a blind vote of all students for the top finalists in each category.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Fans of the hit TV show Downton Abbey can enjoy a day of activities inspired by the drama soon.

According to the New Hanover County Library’s website, a program will take place at the Northeast Regional Public Library on Sunday, Feb. 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Local musician Bibis Ellison and her band will be performing Saturday night at Wild Wing Café, according to Bibis’ website.

The group is scheduled to begin performing at 10:30 p.m.

Wild Wing Café is located at 1331 Military Cutoff Rd.

Local film needs help hitting festival circuit

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The creators of a film produced in the Wilmington area are looking for help so they can take the movie to upcoming festivals.

According to a fundraising website for The Hermit, the movie is a coming of age story that focuses on a man who has become so disenchanted with the world around him that he has chosen to remove himself from it, and a little girl with a drunk and abusive father who is searching for her own escape.
