Express yourself with art workshop

NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Art Association will hold an Expressive Figure workshop with renowned artist and teacher Joanne Anderson.

Anderson's works, executed in watercolor, graphite and charcoal, have received national, regional and local recognition. She is a native of South Carolina with articles about her work published in Watercolor Magic.

The workshop will include brief demos, a few slides and short discussions, leaving the majority of the time for drawing, painting and individual instruction. Demos will be in watercolor, but participants may work in any medium they prefer.

Clothed models will attend the workshop each day.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Local photographer Ned Leary, known for shooting family portraits, marriage proposals and landscapes, recently released a full-length book full of pictures that he feels best represent Wrightsville Beach.

See What I See includes 40 pages of 80 full-color photographs.

Movie starring Linda Lavin to film scenes in Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – A movie starring Wilmington's Linda Lavin will be filming scenes in Wrightsville Beach soon.

A Short History of Decay is an independent film about a man who takes on the role of caregiver for his parents.

According to film permits filed with Wrightsville Beach town officials, the movie will be shooting scenes along East Henderson Street Oct. 15-18 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m and Oct. 19-21 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Local brides laced up their tennis shoes Saturday morning and ran towards discounted wedding dresses in hopes of finding "the one."

As soon as the doors opened, 30 brides, along with their mothers, sisters and bridesmaids, made a mad dash towards the marked-down dresses.

This year, brides were able to choose from four local vendors, including The Dressing Room, Fountaine Bridal, Camille’s Closet and A Carolina Wedding. If the dresses onsite weren’t the correct size, the women had the options of going to the stores listed to see the one they wanted was available there.

Improve your bridge playing skills through workshops

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Ever wanted to get better at playing bridge? If so, you can improve your skills soon through classes that will be held in Wrightsville Beach, according to the town’s website.

Five bridge workshops will be held in the Fran Russ Recreation Center, which is behind town hall, on Oct. 4, 11, and 18 and Nov. 8 and 29.

Sign up your kids for cooking classes

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Parents hoping to have an extra set of hands in the kitchen every now and then are in luck -- Wrightsville Beach Parks and Recreation is offering cooking classes for kids soon, according to the town's website.

Children who participate will learn a new recipe every week. Registration is required.

Classes will be held Mondays, from Nov. 5 through Dec. 17, with no class Nov. 12.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you love to read, but have a collection of books that’s beginning to pile up at home, eReaders can be a great way to save space and enjoy your favorite works of literature.

The only problem is that they can be headache-inducing if you’re not familiar with how to use the technology. No worries if you own a Nook, though – Barnes & Noble at Mayfaire is hosting a class Wednesday night that teaches you how to use the gadget, according to the company’s website.

The class will begin at 6:30.
