WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – In light of recent revelations that the Town of Wrightsville Beach is losing money by collecting fines from certain crimes, the Board of Alderman will discuss decriminalizing some violations.
State law requires the Town to pay 90% of all money collected from citations for misdemeanors to the local school board.
At Thursday's meeting, Alderman will consider eliminating some current misdemeanors and issuing civil citations instead. The proposed changes would affect littering, glass on the beach, and docking vessels and diving at Wynn Plaza amongst others.
If the Town agrees to the changes, the Town will be able to retain a larger portion of the fines.
