$1 Summer Movie Series taking place at Mayfaire

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you’re looking for some indoor fun this summer with your little ones, you can check out a children’s movie on the big screen. Regal Cinemas at Mayfaire is hosting its $1 Summer Movie Series, according to Mayfaire Town Center’s website.

Different movies will be playing each Tuesday and Wednesday morning until August 7.

Next week, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (PG) will be shown Tuesday, while Parental Guidance (PG) will be shown Wednesday.

The New Hanover County Board of Education, in partnership with the Wells Fargo Foundation, will honor New Hanover County Schools administrators and teachers at the 2013-2014 Educator of the Year banquet to be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at 6:30 p.m., in the Ashley High School cafeteria.

New to this year’s Educator of the Year program, Hendrick Toyota of Wilmington will donate the use of a new Toyota Prius II for the district’s 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.  Additional sponsors include Chick-fil-A, Evolution Salon and Spa, Fuzzy Peach, Gold’s Gym, Henry’s, Intracoastal Realty Corporation, K38 Baja Grill, LM Restaurants Hospitality Management, MaryKay, McDonalds, Port City Java, Port City Sports Performance, Teacher’s Aid, Trader Joe’s, Vic’s Corn Popper and YMCA.

During the banquet, the Board of Education will recognize the schools’ 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year, which are as follows:

Donate food and 'Stop Summer Hunger'

NORTH CAROLINA (WECT) – The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is kicking off its 6th summer campaign. This year’s campaign is called Stop Summer Hunger.

Nearly 300,000 children in the Food Bank’s service area lose access to free and reduce-cost meals when schools close for summer break. 30,000 of those children are in the Wilmington area.

The goal of Stop Summer Hunger is to provide 3 million meals during June and July.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you're looking for something fun to do with your family soon, look no further -- Airlie Gardens will be hosting Family Fun Night, according to a news release from a Wilmington spokesperson.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, families can enjoy a night of games, crafts, garden tours, music, and a sneak peek at the new Airlie Gardens Bug Zoo.

Ribbit the Exhibit, which is a collection of copper sculptures by local artist Andy Cobb, will also be on display.

Southeastern King Mackerel Club hosting Fishin' with Special Friends

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Area groups are making special arrangements for special friends to have a chance to catch a big one. 

The Southeastern King Mackerel Club is holding its annual "Fishin' with Special Friends" event June 16 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Johnnie Mercers Pier.

The event pairs volunteers with a mentally or physically disabled partner. The two then work together, trying to reel in a prized fish.

Wilmington students bring American heroes back to life

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Student's from St. Marks Catholic School went "old school" Thursday.

Mrs. Bilger's fifth grade class brought American heroes back to life for a class project. Students were assigned a historical American hero to study.

But they didn't just do a presentation on their life; students dressed up the way their hero would have.

The time period in which the heroes were chosen from were between the 1700-1900s.
