WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – In an effort to combat years of largely unnoticed damage to area bridges, the Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman will discuss changes to Jet Ski regulations.
According to a memo from Town Manager Bob Simpson, both bridges crossing Banks Channel have received extensive damage over the past few years. The damage occurs when salt water is sprayed from the Jet Ski and hits the underside of the bridges. The DOT has identified some deterioration of the sub structures of both bridges.
Currently, the only local ordinance that Wrightsville Beach has regulates Jet Ski speed around vessels, docks, swimmers, and fisherman. The Board of Alderman will consider restricting the speed of Jet Ski within 20 feet of each bridge. The Town would not be able to enforce the new ordinance until signs could be installed at both locations.
The Board will consider the ordinance at their next meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m.
