WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo says the city has secured an easement in front of the Autumn Hall housing development, which will allow the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail to be connected from Halyburton to the Wrightsville Beach bridge.

Saffo said this move means the "bridge to nowhere is no more."  This latest stretch will connect a bridge at Teal Street to the trail along Eastwood Road.

In the summer of last year, City Council voted to spend some of the money that was approved in an earlier parks bond on completing this last gap in the trail through Autumn Hall.  The city was going to wait for a private developer to create a trail that would connect the two parts, but that would have taken at least ten years.

Mayor Saffo commended the staff who worked through the holidays on securing this easement.  He also thanked the Trask Family as well for their assistance in this process.
