New Hanover County Schools to Sponsor First Annual Teacher Trot 5K

News release from New Hanover County Schools:

New Hanover County Schools will host the First Annual Teacher Trot 5K Race on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The inaugural event will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will be held at Ashley High School.  Proceeds raised from the event will help to support staff wellness and student physical education programs.  The event is being sponsored by North Carolina Farm Bureau and Port City Neurosurgery.

“The Teacher Trot is a great opportunity for New Hanover County Schools employees, students, parents and community members to run together in an effort to build our district’s wellness programs,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley, an avid runner. “NHCS encourages both employees and students to put their physical wellness as a priority. Healthy lifestyle habits are essential for learning.”

National group helps locals surf again

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Some special surfers will get a chance to shred the surf at Wrightsville Beach.

Life Rolls On will return to Access #4 on Saturday, May 18 for a day of surfing for those affected by paralysis.

Volunteers and participants are encouraged to come out from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The They Will Surf Again program helps paraplegics and quadriplegics experience the freedom of mobility by riding a wave with the help of special equipment.

Open Studio to host free yoga class

Open Studio to host free yoga class

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Open Studio will host a free yoga class on the first Friday of each month.

According to the studio's website, First Friday Flow is a rigorous, dynamic yoga class with flowing sequenced and covering standing poses, backbends, core work, seated postures and hip openers.

The event is free and will be held from 8:45 a.m. until 9:55 a.m.

Open Studio is located at 1055 Military Cutoff Road.

Regal Cinemas will now show 'Iron Man 3' after reaching deal with Disney

Tony Stark fans in the Port City, have no fear – it looks like Iron Man 3 will be soaring into Mayfaire Mayfaire Stadium 16 after all.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Tony Stark fans in the Port City, have no fear – it looks like Iron Man 3 will be soaring into Mayfaire Mayfaire Stadium 16 after all following a deal reached between Disney and Regal Entertainment Group. 

Previously, it had been announced that the flick, one of the biggest ever filmed in the Wilmington area, may not be coming to one of the area's biggest theaters.

According to the LA Times, Mayfaire Stadium 16's parent company, Regal Entertainment Group, had been in a dispute with Disney over the cut of the movie sales the cinema would get. The article said the company had already pulled marketing materials and stopped selling pre-sale tickets to its theaters across the country, which included the cinema at the Mayfaire Town Center.

Students prepare special three-course meal at Bluewater Grill

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Give your kitchen a break tonight. Let CFCC students do the cooking.

Students in CFCC's hositality management program will be prepare and serve a three-course meal at the Bluewater Grill Wednesday night to give them hands-on experience in a professional setting.

The meal will include two glasses of wine or soft drinks, and will cost $35. The menu will include soup or salad, a choice of entree (Drunken Coconut Chicken, Rasta Pasta with Shrimp, or Jerk Spiced Pork Chop) and dessert.

Money raised from the event will also go towards fuding for the program.

Dinner will be served from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
