Fit food fast at Epic Food Co. | News

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new restaurant in Wilmington caters to anyone who's struggled to find healthy meals that are full of flavor and not fat.

Epic Food Company started in March under the guidance of Chef James Bain.

Bain did fine dining for years (many may remember his last place, Harvest Moon) but now he is serving a different audience.

"I felt there was one thing missing in Wilmington, and that was a place to get something healthy that wasn't expensive, and a place where you can also get it pretty quickly," said Bain.

As with any new venture, there are several challenges, and among his, Bain says, is creating a menu that serves those with special dietary needs. It's also about informing the community that you are what you eat.

"The challenge is with education," said Bain. "People need to know about food and what it does to their bodies, so we are taking a lot of time to talk with customers and also learning about all of the specific diets that are out there, trying to meet those needs."

With his experience in the kitchen, Bain says he loves adding flavor with fresh herbs and substituting fattier ingredients with ones that are lower in calories but higher in nutritional values.

"That's hopefully what a chef can do, bring flavor to foods that are normally prepared quickly, but I use my chef background to make my food taste good predominantly, but then of course be good for you."

Epic Food Company is located at 1125 Military Cutoff Road.
