WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Stand up paddlebaording is making a splash in the Cape Fear region as people flock to the water every chance they get.
Jason Colclough is the co-owner of Carolina Paddleboard Company. He and his partner Phil Luther opened the business off Airlie Road last November. They decided to start making equipment for paddleboarding since no one else in the area was doing so.
Colclough and Luther say the sport is here to stay because anyone can do it.
"We've got so many creeks and estuaries here, that you can get off the beaten path, you can go somewhere different every day," explained Luther.
Luther said the vantage point of standing up and going slow through the marshes expands your view of the area.
"You can see everything and you can move at your own pace," said Luther.
The hardest part for beginners trying to paddleboard is just getting the balance, learning to relax and become comfortable with the water. Colclough and Luther suggest beginners get a lesson to learn everything they need to know in just one hour.
