WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT)- Surfers gathered at Access #4 on Wrightsville Beach Saturday, but it wasn't for a typical surfing competition.
The Life Rolls On Foundation hosted a surfing event for those with spinal cord injuries. The non-profit was created 10 years ago by Jesse Billauer who became partially paralyzed after a surfing accident.
He says the feeling of flying through the water empowers those dealing with injuries and makes them feel like they can do anything.
"Events like this get people out of their house get them off the streets and into the water, where you have a lot of freedom and independence," said Billauer. "It's a beautiful sensation."
There will be a similar event in August, in Virginia Beach, Va.
