WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Part of a weather-worn pier in Wrightsville Beach has been torn down.

Demolition took place Thursday on the Crystal Pier.  About 25 feet of the structure came down.

In September, the town installed signs warning swimmers and surfers about the pier's instability after high surf brought down a piling and a cross-bracing beam.

Jeff DeGroote snapped pictures as crews worked on the pier. He collected several boards and planks that had washed ashore from the destruction. He plans to make tables and picture frames with the wood.

A clean-up crew picked up the rest of the debris off the beach.
