NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Cyber Crime Task Force to warn people about a telephone scam.
According to a release issued by the sheriff's office Monday, the scam involves someone calling and saying they are with Microsoft and there is a problem with your computer.
The caller has a strong accent and the area code on the caller ID comes back as an unrecognized area.
If you get a call like authorities say DO NOT PROVIDE USERNAME, PASSWORD or any account information over the telephone.
If you can ask questions and take notes that may help law enforcement. You should also contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
